Summer academy in Prague - The sustainable city

Introduction
Since the 1996 HABITAT congress in Istanbul, sustainability in urban development and architecture has become a major issue. The Goethe Institut, Prague and the Czech Technical University in Prague are joint organizers of a three-week summer academy on this subject to be held in August 1999.

Course content
The summer academy offers a combined theoretical and practical approach to the subject including its urban planning, architectural and engineerial aspects. Special attention will be given to the aspect of energy efficiency. Participants' knowledge and skills will be developed in a dynamic Integral Planning design process. The study programme will consist of lectures, workshops and field trips.

The field trips will take place in the first week. There will be guided visits to significant areas in Prague to:

  • the medieval city
  • modern architecture areas of the 1930s
  • urban planning schemes of the 1970s
  • parks and green areas near the city.
The situations will be analyzed in the workshop sessions.

Lectures will take place in the mornings. The following topics will be covered under the special aspect of sustainability / durability:

  • urban design and traffic
  • urban climate
  • energy-efficient town-planning and architecture (Low-Energy Architecture)
  • building services
  • aesthetics in urban design and architecture

In the afternoons, workshop activities are offered: teams of 3-4 students from different study disciplines and different countries will develop the design for a sustainable quarter for 800 inhabitants in Prague. The design will involve features of urban planning, architecture and engineering, especially a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency and low-energy building technology. The student teams will be guided and advised by an international team of specialists, including urban planners, architects and mechanical engineers under the coordination of  Dipl. Ing. Arch. Christian Herdel.

Participants
The course is targeted at students of Urban Planning, Architecture, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines.

Students from all countries may apply. It is expected that a large proportion of the participants will be from Germany and from the Czech Republic. A maximum of 30 participants will be accepted.

Schedule and registration
The summer academy will take place from 2nd to 21th of August 1999.
