Basic course of Soil Mechanics for Civil Engineers. Introduction to origin of soils, soil description, multi-phase media behaviour, soil classification, compressibility and shear resistance, soil testing, earth pressures, assessment of stability and deformation of soil mass, applications in civil engineering.

1. Origin of soil, multi-phase media behaviour
2. Soil particles, particle size analysis, water is soil
3. Soil description and classification
4. Stresses in soil mass, effective stress concept
5. Permeability of soils and ground-water flow
6. Compressibility of soils, principles of consolidation theory and limits of application
7. Shear resistance of soils and applications, laboratory and field testing
8. Lateral stresses, soil and water action, retaining structures
9. Retaining structures
10. Slope stability problems, basic methods of slope stability calculation
11. Introduction to shallow footings - bearing resistance and settlement
12. Soil compaction, laboratory compaction test, quality control of on-site compaction process
13. Basic principles of site monitoring and field instrumentation
