Basic information for Doctoral Degree study (hereinafter "DS") applicants

 

Doctoral Degree study programmes offer the highest form of education whose main characteristic is student´s individual, own research activity in cooperation with an experienced supervisor.
This type of study is the preparation for further careers in research, as well as for highly qualified positions in a range of other professions. Successful Doctoral Degree studies are completed by the defence of the dissertation and by awarding the degree of Ph.D. used after the name.

Studies in Doctoral Degree study programmes are regulated by the following documents:
- The Study and Examination Rules for Students at CTU (SER)
- The Code of Practice for Doctoral Degree Studies at FCE CTU in Prague.

List of Ph.D. study programmes and their courses

Before submitting the application, the student chooses the Department where they want to study and the Supervisor, who will guide them throughout the whole Doctoral Degree studies. Together with submitting the DS application, the student also chooses a framework topic of their dissertation.
The Department´s and Supervisor´s previous agreement are conditional on the proposal for admitting a student to DS.

The admissions proceedings are usually held in June (with the start of instruction from 1st September) and in January (with the start of instruction from 1st March). For more detailed information, see the Doctoral Degree study notice board.

The type of study can be a) full-time
  b) combined

The Ph.D. student chooses the type of study as agreed with the Supervisor´s Department.

 

a) full-time study

The full-time type of DS allows access to all student status benefits - entitlement to a scholarship, dormitory accommodation, or an accommodation scholarship and student reduced fare.
A full-time Ph.D. student can be simultaneously employed to work on research projects up to 75% of their work load.

The Ph.D. student´s duties comprise the design of their individual study plan (hereinafter "ISP") via the KOS information system, i.e. listing 6 compulsory professional courses and English, plus other potential elective courses.

Part of the Ph.D. student´s ISP content in full-time study is teaching practice, and the duty of completing part of their studies at a foreign institution with a duration of at least one month, or participation in an international project, or another form of international cooperation.

Study block
The study block (6 compulsory professional courses, English and Professional Debate) in full-time study must be completed within 2 years from the start of studies.

The Ph.D. student´s professional activity also includes the elaboration of a written study on the dissertation topic and Professional Debate. The holding of the Professional Debate is regulated by the Instructions for Holding the Professional Debate in Ph.D. Studies at FCE CTU in Prague.

The final doctoral examination (hereinafter "FDE") is regulated by Art. 29 SER.
Ph.D. students in full-time study are obliged to pass FDE within 4 years from the start of their studies (with a potential extension by max. 1 year based on a justified application approved by the Dean).

The defence of the doctoral dissertation (hereinafter "DD") is regulated by Art. 30 SER.
Ph.D. students are obliged to submit their DD no later than within 6 years from the start of their DS, and the studies must be completed within 8 years (duration of the maximum length of studies). The maximum length of studies also includes the time when the studies were interrupted.

 

b) combined study

The Ph.D. student´s duties comprise the design of their individual study plan (hereinafter "ISP") via the KOS information system, i.e. listing 6 compulsory professional courses and English, plus other potential elective courses.

Part of the Ph.D. student´s ISP content in combined study is the duty of completing part of their studies at a foreign institution with a duration of at least one month, or participation in an international project, or another form of international cooperation.
